Civil War battles, compiled from the Civil War Sites Advisory Commission's Report of the Nation's Civil War Battlefields, are outlined here. Smaller battles, or skirmishes, in an area often led to a larger significant battle. Significant battles are in bold text; when linked, follow those for more battle details.
To the casual reader, Civil War battle campaigns seem to have occurred in the east, but they occurred in the east and west. Overall, America's Civil War occurred in three theaters, or locations—East, West and Trans-Mississippi. The Eastern Theater was a small section around Virginia's Chesapeake Bay area that contained the Union's capital, Washington, DC, and the Confederate capital, Richmond, Virginia. The Western Theater was between the Mississippi River and the Appalachian Mountains. It was a fluid area because originally it did not extend down to the south, but General Sherman's southern campaigns extended the land area. Finally, the Trans-Mississippi followed along the Mississippi river and the then western territories and states.
